Interview with Trevor of The Killing Moon
Formerly known as Animal Suit Driveby, this emerging band from Maine is making their mark on the music world. I caught up with bass player Trevor Geaghan to talk about the music, his heroes, and boxer briefs!
Kayla: So have you checked out beatthescene.com yet?
Trevor: I was actually just checking it out, yeah.
Kayla: Cool! So a lot of times we get to the basics, the music and stuff, but I want to ask some other things that I think the fans would like to read.
Trevor: Awesome! Those are always fun!
Kayla: First off...tell me about going from “Animal Suit Driveby” to “The Killing Moon” so we can settle the rumors once and for all.
Trevor: Well here's what happened: We started this band as a joke. Just something to do and we all knew each other from jazz band in school. We later realized we had something that was sounding pretty good and we started making music that wasn't a joke and we were stuck with a name that was still a joke. When we decided to sign with Fearless it was kind of do or die time to change the name so we did it right before we signed.
Kayla: So where did "The Killing Moon" come from?
Trevor: The Killing Moon comes from a song by Echo & The Bunnymen. Its a pretty sweet tune.
Kayla: Donnie Darko soundtrack!
Trevor: Haha, yes! Good movie as well!
Kayla: Speaking of movies, tell me some of your favorites.
Trevor: Hmmmm... this is a tough one. I'd say anything with Jennifer Aniston. I'm obsessed with her. Either that or ‘Bassassins’ the Story of the Year DVD. Its HILARIOUS!
Kayla: I'll have to agree. They’re funny guys!
Trevor: Haha, yes they are.
Kayla: So do you think a sense of humor is important in the music industry?
Trevor: 100% it would be impossible to do this stuff without a sense of humor. Everyone I've met seems to be pretty out there that's in a band. WHY ARE WE ALL SO WEIRD?!
Kayla: I think weird is a compliment so I guess it works!
Kayla: What would you say your most valuable asset as a band is? Or even as individuals in the group?
Trevor: We like to think its our live show. We have fun. The crowd seems to as well. Or at least I hope they do!
Kayla: Doing a great live show is a huge part of being a successful band. What's the best part of playing to a live audience versus recording? Or is recording better?
Trevor: The people! Its really fun meeting people at shows. That and the music has so much more feeling [when performed] live. You can really get into it with what you play and physically you can move around and jump and be crazy live as opposed to in the studio. Recording is great too, its all fun! I'd have to say I enjoy live more though.
Kayla: This past summer you got to play Warped Tour! Tell me about that.
Trevor: Warped is awesome and awful. Its the coolest tour ever and it has so many benefits. You can meet tons of great people and the shows are always good, but it is also so much work. You need to get up early and set everything up, sit at the tent all day, play the set, then go back to the tent. The whole time you have to be in the sun and its just exhausting. Don't get me wrong though, it was the most fun I've ever had! Totally worth it! Plus there are so many good bands on it there's always a killer set going on somewhere.
Kayla: I specifically remember the temperature in Fitchburg, Mass being 115 degrees the day Warped was in town. That must've been crazy. I know I was exhausted just from walking around.
Trevor: Yeah that was wild. So many kids were being taken out in ambulances because it was so hot. There was a sprinkler tent thing that sprayed water on you right near our stage. That was a lifesaver!
Kayla: Alright here's a fun one for you: Homestarunner.com, Strongbad E-Mails…
Trevor: Oh wow! My hero!
Kayla: I believe it's e-mail #10...that's you right?
Trevor: Haha, yes it is. Its the best thing that has ever happened to me!
Kayla: So okay...we're all wondering…[according to the e-mail] you're a vampire and...what?
Trevor: ...and lover and a child and a mother. That's what was coming after
Kayla: Haha, okay then. I think Meredith Brooks would appreciate that.
Trevor: Haha yes!
Kayla: Tell me about being from the great town of Hampden, Maine. Actually, just Maine in general since the 207 is really blossoming in the music world.
Trevor: Well it was tough when we started because there was nowhere to play around Hampden except schools. We all moved to the Portland area to try to build a fan base there. We got the word out about our band really by the internet. We played a lot of shows in Portland, but bands from Maine really have to rely on the internet because we're stuck all the way up here in the corner away from big cities.
Kayla: Very true.
Trevor: As far as just living there it’s amazing. We all love Maine! Plus the music scene is pretty amazing right now!
Kayla: It is. And you did get your name out there...everyone in Portland knows The Killing Moon and now the rest of the world is catching on.
Trevor: Hopefully! We're trying! So many good bands from the good ol' 207. We're really lucky to have so much local talent.
Kayla: Who are some of your favorite Maine or even New England bands?
Trevor: ‘Cambiata’ is so amazing. Everyone should check them out. Great guys and a great band. There are so many though. Sparks the Rescue, Too Late The Hero, Radiation Year. Therefore I Am is a great band from the Boston area. And of course our boys in Vanna!
Kayla: All great bands, and yes I have to agree EVERYONE should check out Cambiata!
Kayla: So you've played with some great bands. Who would you love to play with in the future? Like your dream lineup.
Trevor: Oh wow. That's a tough one. Ummmm... if I died and went to heaven I think we would be sharing the stage with Aerosmith.
Kayla: Very, very cool!
Trevor: And Will Smith
Kayla: That's quite a lineup! And where would this dream concert happen...dream venue?
Trevor: Haha, ummmmm.... I've actually never thought of that. A sold out Bangor Auditorium.
Kayla: Awesome! Close to home!
Kayla: So you did Punk goes 90's which is the best thing since sliced bread. Tell me about your cover of Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know".
Trevor: Haha, well thank you! We didn't really know what to do with that song at first, but we all loved the idea of redoing that song and it ended up working out. We worked with Jon Wyman as a producer for it and everything he touches turns to gold! So we knew it would work out in the end.
Kayla: So if punk went country what would you do for a cover?
Trevor: Mr. Mom by Lonestar
Kayla: And what about punk goes hip hop?
Trevor: Freakin' It by Will Smith. I love that song!
Kayla: So what can we expect from TKM in the future?
Trevor: You can expect some rock and some roll. Aside from that... a new CD that we will be recording soon and a lot of touring! Hopefully we'll see you all at a show soon! And a lot of goofing off. We love having a good time and doing weird things.
Kayla: Alright, some finish up questions. I'm gonna go a little "Inside The Actor's Studio"...except, musicians studio.
Trevor: Haha, yes!
Kayla: What's your favorite word?
Trevor: I'm going to have to think about that one... if I had to choose one word out of them all it would probably be ridiculous. I use it all the time and I live by it.
Kayla: What's your least favorite [word]?
Trevor: I am thinking so hard about this one. I think I'm going to go with bored. Bored is a bad word. I hate being bored. That and I couldn't think of anything else.
Kayla: Last question. Boxers or briefs?
Trevor: BOXERBRIEFS! I'm a big fan of them.
Kayla: They're pretty popular with you gentlemen I guess!
Trevor: Yes. Its the new big thing. Its sweeping the nation!
Kayla: I guess so!
Kayla: Well thank you so much for doing the interview and we hope to see some more awesome things from The Killing Moon.
Trevor: Well thank you for doing this! You had some great questions. I actually had a lot of fun answering them…as you can probably tell.
Kayla: It was a lot of fun asking them and getting to talk with you. I will most likely be seeing you next time you're back in Maine!
