Kids Of Survival

Myspace.com/kidsofsurvival

What can you say about a group of four guys from New York City who make, in their own words, “ear-cum” power-pop music and bring a party to every state they go? The bottom line is, tons. In a time when power-pop is the norm, “ya heard one ya heard em all” state of mind, Kids Of Survival sticks out from the crowd? Don’t believe me? Judge for yourself. Whether you’re out there in your room or car listening; right up near the stage with them dancing and having a blast; or hell, even playing strip beer pong with them, you get it. Their music will move you and the fabulous guys that make up Kids Of Survival will move you. You’ll feel it. No matter who you are, what your background is, it’s a universal feeling, you’ll connect with their music. You’ll feel like you’ve just been slipped a rock-filled-ruffie, and you won’t be able to get enough. Not only can you get your K.O.S fix by listening to "Good 'Til Your Heart Pops", they're also a band whos on tour every chance they get, be sure to check out when theyre hitting up a city near you.

Beat The Scene: So why don’t you tell me a little about your band? Like some background info?
Kids Of Survival: Well we’re a band called Kids Of Survival from a little town called New York City. We started back in Queens NY, playing shows in a bunch of various bands from all around. Everyone disbanded from their original bands and made up this Queens-All-Star band, and we’ve been touring under a couple of different names that basically didn’t work out for us. Finally we settled in with the name Kids Of Survival because of dealing with legal problems. We decided to take Kids Of Survival because it comes from a group of artists who basically came from nothing in the south Bronx, and they started this revolution like this crazy art from nothing and now all of them, and like they came from nothing, and we came from nothing, and try to build up this music and we just really love the name. And after that we teamed up with CHAMBERLIN RECORDS, the label that put out our CD, “good til your heart pops”, that just came out I believe January 15th, and right now we’re touring. And that’s kind of the big story of everything.

BTS: So who plays what?
KOS: Hi, this is Vin, I play guitar in Kids Of Survival.
This is Dylan, and I play drums.
Frank, and I play guitar, also.
My name is Gary, I play bass and sing in the band. Do you have a lighter?! (Group laughs) It’s funny, I’m talking into the phone and you’re not really here to pass me a lighter anyway. What’s your favorite color?

BTS: How long have you been on tour?
KOS: We’ve been touring a lot. We’ll be on tour til the end of March. Then we’re taking a week and a half off, and well be out basically from April through the summer.

BTS: Oh! Where do you guys plan on going?
KOS: ALL OVER THE UNITED STATED OF AMERICA. Sleeping in back yards, sleeping in houses. Let us know when we come by if we can stay there. Hopefully we’ll make it to Canada, (YEAH I REALLY WANNA GO TO CANADA)

KOS: Do you have any good stories from being on tour? Or any horror stories?
KOS: We have a lot of good stories. Oh man. Dozens. Pittsburg. We got thrown out of a hotel in Pittsburg for being too loud, but it was 730 in the morning and we had 9 people in our room, and we were crazy. And basically when they knocked on our door to inspect our room the band that was on tour jumped out the window in their underwear. I got high with a blind man in the treetops of Oregon. He was a beautiful man, he was a really lovely guy, and I liked him.

BTS: How about crazy fan stories?
KOS: Yeah! In fact we’ve all been in bands for a while, but this probably the most serious band we’ve been in, we’ve had the most success with but back when we were called Stiffler, This kid asked us to sign his leg, and after we all signed his leg he goes “I’m gonna go and get this tattooed.” And I’m like “dude, you’re crazy, no way”, so that was in Philly, came back to play the same venue two months later, show up, this kid pulls up his pant leg, and he’s got all of our names tattooed into his leg, and the band name. And to this day he still has it even through were not called that anymore. And the worst part is I didn’t know he was getting it tattooed on him, after my name I was writing ridiculous stuff like things I would never get tattooed on my body permanently, and ridiculous pictures.

BTS: How would you describe Kids Of Survival’s sound?
KOS: well, in the short term answer is, its like ear-cum. it’s the kind of sound that makes your ears cum. However, the true answer would be, it’s a very pop rock record, its straight up just melodic pop, and its basically rock music, its ready for the radio. It took a while to get the record out, and we basically released it on the label. Basically I think the overall vibe of our music is to just have music that just provokes emotion, whether it be anger or joy, whatever it can just really brings out something in a person and make them feel more connected to, that’s what we want to do. We want to make music that connects to people.

BTS: Where do you see Kids Of Survival in a few years?
KOS: In a van? In our van. At the bare minimum opening for a bigger act, putting out a few more records within the next few years. Basically every days a baby step toward the bigger goal.

BTS: What’s inspiring you guys to write your music, to go out there and play your shows, and to keep going?
KOS: Passion and love for rock and roll. The people are amazing. And we’re more in it for the fact to do something we love. We don’t want to work in an office; we don’t like wearing ties, even on stage. We don’t want to be in a cubical. It’s not for us. We can’t wear women’s underwear in a cubical. It’s just what we love to do.

BTS: What’s your favorite place to play?
KOS: Dylan- (oh, at the end of this quote can you please put, “while the wind is blowing in his hair”?) just so they get the mental image. My one of my favorite places to play is def Montana. The kids there are awesome. I met a kid named Dylan who looked like Cecil Deville, and I don’t know, a lot of kids there like to have fun. They don’t believe in the Debby downer club, I hate those kids. (While the wind is blowing in his hair)
Vin- I like when were home and were playing NY, its awesome because we get to hangout with our friends and have a good time. And it’s a good thing. I like NY. I like being home. I like sleeping in my bed. Not on the floor sleeping next to someone’s bed.
Gary: Out of all the planets to play, I think earth is my favorite. There are lots of stages on there. I’ve never seen a stage on mars. We got offered a show on the mood. But we didn’t think anyone would come out. We didn’t think we would make any money. Id say, my favorite place to play in this country, as of right now, that I’ve played before, once or twice, possibly three times, is…I don’t know, I'm going to say anywhere Florida where were close to Ricky. My last favorite place to play in CT, we played CT and I don’t know, it was hilarious.

BTS: what kind of music are you into personally? Does it play a role in the type of music you play?
KOS: we spend the entire summer listening to Envy On The Coast and Mayday Parade. And a band called Subject The Fugitive introduced us to the news Mars Volta record that is just a big thing of madness. Just madness.

BTS: So I heard your songs are now on iTunes?
KOS: Yes. You can purchase it on iTunes or Amazon.com. Those are both digital downloads. You can also get our CD from any show.

BTS: For the people who go to your shows, what can they expect?
KOS: A lot of full frontal male nudity. If you come to one of our shows, you should expect the old time, like there used to be when you would go to a local show with all your friends and you would rock out, before there were a bunch of people just standing there looking like they’re judging you. Just come to our show, were about laughing, and having a good time, just showing people what we have to offer with our music, and hopefully we can give back what there giving us by listening. Basically we're a good time band. We bring no judgment to the table; we just want to have fun.

BTS: What do you have to say to your fans?
KOS: hahah. Come to our shows. Come out now. The war is over. Thanks for listening. We love you people. Tell your friends, because we want to meet you all. And everyone should become a Kid Of Survival. Just don’t stop loving us, because if you do we’ll feel lonely. Even if you’re 50 or over you can still be a kid of survival. That’s what’s its about. We have senior citizens Kids Of Survival. We give senior citizen discounts on merch.

BTS: I guess that’s it. Do you have anything you want to add?
KOS: Yeah! This is the plug part! Where we plug it! Well, Please listen to us, KIDS OF SURVIVAL, We’re all over the Internet, just put it in your Google search and I’m sure you’ll find it. Uh check out our record, “GOOD TIL YOUR HEART POPS” its on iTunes. It’s on Amazon, It’s at all our shows that are listed on our myspace, come hangout with us, we’re bored, and we need friends. So love us, please, we love you. The end. One more thing! If you come out to a show, and it’s the kind of venue where they serve alcohol, we will challenge you to strip beer pong. That includes fans, bands, and parents. Especially parents, we want to see you naked.
