Copeland
MYSPACE Tanya: First off, Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us! Why dont we start off by you giving us some backround information on Copeland, (How the band all came together, When was your big break, The story behind the bands name etc..) Copeland: The band has been together for over 5 years. We all met over the course of a few years and developed friendships while doing other musical projects. I guess the first incarnation of the band started when I met James, our bass player at a summer camp that we were both working at. Bryan came along a bit later after we'd been touring for a while and Jon joined us a little over 3 years ago. I don't know what our big break was. I'm not even sure if that's happened yet. It's been a really slow growing process since the beginning. We've worked our way up from playing in basements, to VFW halls, to small bars, to bigger bars, to mid-sized venues. Every step took a lot of work to move up. We're still working hard. Tanya: What venue is the band's favorite place to perform at? Copeland: For us, it's more about the surrounding area. We only spend a couple hours on-stage, the rest of the day, we're looking for a nice place to walk around, or a searching for a good place to eat. Any venue with a Chipotle, Panera Bread, or a good coffee shop within walking distance is a winner for us. Tanya: The new album is a bit different from the first two the band released, What inspired you to switch things up with "Eat, Sleep, Repeat..", When writing it were your influences different as opposed to when you wrote the first two albums? Copeland: Well, I don't think we were consciously trying to switch things up. We weren't trying to throw our listeners a curve ball. We were just trying to make the best record we could. As for the influences, I'm sure there were some different ones since we're always looking for new music. But the major ones have been the same for a while... The Beatles, The Cardigans, Coldplay, Radiohead, Sunnyday Real Estate, New Order, The Police. Tanya: Does the band have any pre-show rituals? Copeland: I warm up my voice a good bit, drink hot tea. I think I'm the only one with much of a routine. Tanya: What is the bands favorite song to perform live? Copeland: "When You Thought You'd Never Stand Out" Tanya: You guys seem to be constantly out on the road touring, What is your favorite thing about touring.. Your least favorite? Copeland: My favorite thing about touring is getting to meet new people and having them appreciate the performance and have a good time. My least favorite thing is being away from my home and friends and family. I get a bit homesick on tour. Tanya: How long does the writing process of a song usually take? Copeland: Anywhere between 2 days and 2 years. Some of them write themselves in a very short time... others might get a very promising start, but take a really long time to get finished. I wish I were more prolific. Tanya: Have you decided what your next single will be? Copeland: Nope. I don't know if that's our decision to make. That's something the label people like to decide. Tanya: What advice do you have to the bands out there who are trying to make it in the industry? Copeland: Play for as many people as you can, birthday parties, basements, anything you can do... and treat everyone well. We wouldn't be anywhere today if it weren't for the help of our friends that we've met along the way. Tanya: After everything is all said and done, What do you want to be remembered for? Copeland: I would love to be remembered as a music maker and music lover. Any Last Words? Copeland: We love meeting people on tour so if we roll through town, please come check us out and say hello.
